Why are the E-Jeepneys being launched in Makati City, and later in Negros Occidental?
The E-Jeepneys are being launched in Makati because Makati is one of the partner cities in this project. Makati has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with GRIPP to be a pilot city for the Climate Friendly Cities project.
Makati City has welcomed this initiative and are enthusiastic in pioneering it in the country because it is clear that, in addressing solid waste and air pollution issues, and in offering a much cheaper fuel alternatives to jeepney drivers who service the city’s main routes, the project will result in clear, tangible benefits for its citizens.
GRIPP and Greenpeace currently have a program called ‘100% Renewable Energy Negros’ which seeks to make Negros the first province in Southeast Asia to be powered by 100% renewable energy.
One of the major milestones in the history of collaboration between the two organizations is the fight of the Negrenses, particularly the people of Pulupandan, against a proposed 50-MW coal-fired power plant. The defeat of the proposed coal plant helped spark the revolution towards a totally clean energy future that is slowly taking ground in Negros Occidental.
The said GRIPP project is responsible for pioneering the program of displacing the coal-fired power plant by interfacing alternative on-grid renewable energy projects, energy efficiency, and integrated public-private and local-national energy planning. The GRIPP project also involved initiatives that aim to build the planning capacities of local government in terms of utilizing resources that both renewable and organic to the province’s economy and environment. Part of the GRIPP project also involves extensive off-grid renewable energy development under the framework of poverty alleviation.
