GREENPEACE CALLS FOR CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION INTO COAL ASH SPILL

Greenpeace today called for a criminal investigation into the failure of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to prevent the spill of more than 500 million gallons of coal ash sludge into the Emory River, a tributary of the Clinch and Tennessee Rivers. The spill followed the breach of a dike at a coal-fired power plant owned by the TVA, and covered as many as 400 acres of land with potentially toxic ash as high as six feet deep.

Today Secretary of Interior Dirk Kempthorne announced the issuance of a new regulation further weakening the protections polar bears receive under the Endangered Species Act. The regulation, known as a "4(d) Rule," for section 4(d) of the Endangered Species Act, purports to exempt greenhouse gas emissions and oil development, the two leading threats to the species, from regulation under the Act.

TWO LAWLESS TUNA FISHING ZONES IN PACIFIC CLOSED

Greenpeace declared the outcome of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission a failed compromise – one which is too weak to stop the overfishing of the Pacific bigeye and yellowfin tuna – but applauds the positive decision to close two of the high seas areas between Pacific Island Countries to purse seine fishing starting in 2010. The Commission will also consider the closure of the third such area in 2009. Greenpeace has been campaigning for these areas to be designated as marine reserves in order to support sustainable fisheries, protect Pacific marine life and to end pirate fishing in the region.

In the second edition of Greenpeace’s seafood sustainability scorecard released today, the supermarket chains Whole Foods, Ahold USA, Target and Harris Teeter received “passing” scores indicating a small, but significant shift in purchasing practices and policies. Publix, while failing to achieve the 40 percent score necessary to receive a ‘passing’ grade on the ranking scale, moved up from the lowest position (20) in last June’s scorecard to #13 now. Trader Joe’s again came in at #17, the worst ranking of the national supermarket chains surveyed. Three regional chains ranked at the bottom.

The University of Florida recently removed Kleenex brand tissues in campus stores Graham Oasis and Beaty Market, a move supported by students and Greenpeace. The university decided to remove Kleenex brand tissues, produced by tissue giant Kimberly-Clark (K-C), because they are made with virgin fiber, much of which is sourced from the North American Boreal forest--one of our last remaining ancient forests.

The latest Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics reveals that in spite of green marketing, most consumer electronics companies are not adequately responding to the global warming crisis. Since the first publication of the quarterly guide in August 2006, companies have gradually improved their performance on toxic chemicals and e-waste issues; however, only a minority are leading on energy and climate change.

BRIEFING: Saving the Economy by Saving the Planet

The financial crisis and prospect of global recession has created an unexpected opportunity to take dramatic action on behalf of the planet. It has become clear that governments will need to intervene in their economies on an unprecedented scale, and many are now considering stimulating growth with massive investment programs. However, it must be recognized that such large-scale intervention will not succeed unless we also protect the environmental capitol that underpins our economic health.
