On November 25, 2008, Greenpeace and a coalition of nineteen
organizations including unions, public health, good government and environmental groups submitted comments criticizing the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) latest advice on how chemical plants should comply with new chemical security standards.

Vote Follows Anniversary of Madrid Rail Attack

On March 27th, the U.S. House of Representative
approved a rail security bill (H.R. 1401) that included an amendment by Rep. Markey (D-MA) that would dramatically enhance rail security and safety by re-routing ultra-hazardous cargo, such as chlorine gas, around high threat urban areas.

More Than A Year After Katrina, Eco-Friendly New Orleans House Stands Firm

As we enter a second year since Hurricane Katrina, let us not forget those who have been forgotten by their government. In the Gulf of Mexico, the catastrophic impact of Katrina still lingers. After a negligent response by the federal government, the disaster has been compounded by an inadequate clean up and rebuilding effort, especially in New Orleans.

Company Report Card

Here is how the largest electronics companies rank on the toxic chemicals in their products. Removing toxic chemicals for products reduces pollution and makes reuse and recycling less hazardous and cheaper. None of these companies have a global policy on electronic waste so this listing is based only on global policy on toxic chemicals in products.

Going Hi-Tech is Highly Toxic

The world is consuming more and more electronic products every year. This has caused a dangerous explosion in electronic scrap (e-waste) containing toxic chemicals and heavy metals that cannot be disposed of or recycled safely. But this problem can be avoided. We are pressing leading electronic companies to change to turn back the toxic tide of e-waste.

What is E-Waste?

The amount of electronic products discarded globally has skyrocketed recently, with 20-50 million tonnes generated every year. If such a huge figure is hard to imagine, think of it like this - if the estimated amount of e-waste generated every year would be put into containers on a train it would go once around the world!

Where does E-Waste go?

Many old electronic goods gather dust in storage waiting to be reused, recycled or thrown away. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that as much as three quarters of the computers sold in the US are stockpiled in garages and closets. When thrown away, they end up in landfills or incinerators or, more recently, are exported to Asia.

E-Waste Solutions

We believe that manufacturers of electronic goods, who have benefited from sales of their products, should take responsibility for them from production through to the end of their lives. To prevent an e-waste crisis, manufacturers must design clean electronics with longer lifespan, that are safe and easy to recycle and will not expose workers and the environment to hazardous chemicals.

What's in Electronic Devices?

Electronic devices are a complex mixture of several hundred materials. A mobile phone, for example, contains 500 to 1000 components. Many of these contain toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and beryllium and hazardous chemicals, such as brominated flame retardants. Polluting PVC plastic is also frequently used.
