New Delhi, India — The Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) has approved the sale of Doritos, a Chips brand owned by PepsiCo, a product proved to contain GM corn by Greenpeace last year and hence detained by Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) recently after a consignment reached Mumbai. The approval however was given without any testing and solely on a written confirmation from the importer that the product does not contain GM corn. This approval of the GEAC came into light after the minutes of the meeting was published on its website yesterday.

GEAC’s decision has been criticized by Greenpeace India, which was the first organization to expose the presence of illegal GM food in Indian market. In May last year, Greenpeace had made public, after credible scientific evidence that Doritos corn chips, was containing more than two different traces of GM corn and was being sold in the market, illegally.

Commenting on the new development Jai Krishna, Campaigner of Greenpeace India said, ‘ While, we commend the move of the DGFT to detain suspected imports and redirect the importer to GEAC, the fact that the approval seems to have been given without any proof  of testing for GMO’s is truly unfortunate. GEAC continues its haphazard regulation on GM food, risking the health of the consumers - children who are a major consumers of fast foods like Doritos chips in the country.

Greenpeace demands:
  1. Immediate confiscation on the bulk of the old imports of Doritos which are still available in the market.
  2. GEAC moves forward towards a system that identifies and tests samples independently to verify claims of the importer.

Notes to Editor

The samples of Doritos that were taken last year contained the gm corn varieties, MON 863 and NK 603. They were taken in the markets of south Delhi. The similar variety of the corn NK603 has been found to cause reproductive disorders by Austrian government scientists in November 2008.
